## **Overview**

The new [RNLI Lifeboat Station](https://rnli.org/find-my-nearest/lifeboat-stations/cleethorpes-lifeboat-station) in Cleethorpes provides a purpose-built facility designed to improve the safety, efficiency and operational capabilities of the local lifeboat crew.

Designed by [BGA Architects](https://www.bga-architects.com/), the two-storey station is positioned directly on the seafront and replaces the previous facilities on Central Promenade. The new building includes an integrated boat hall and workshop, changing and training facilities, volunteer offices, a RNLI shop and a dedicated beach-front slipway. This allows the lifeboat to launch directly into the water, removing the need to cross a public road during an emergency.

The station was designed to accommodate both the existing D-class lifeboat and a larger B-class Atlantic 85, allowing the RNLI to respond to a wider range of incidents and weather conditions.

Vobster Architectural contributed specialist architectural concrete elements to the scheme, manufacturing bespoke quoins, cills, heads and pre-cast concrete caps, alongside a completely bespoke plaque created specifically for the project.

## **Concept**

As a prominent building on the Cleethorpes seafront, the design needed to balance the practical requirements of a working lifeboat station with a considered architectural appearance.

The architectural detailing formed an important part of the finished building, with Vobster commissioned to produce a range of bespoke concrete elements to complement the wider design. Quoins, cills and heads were manufactured for specific locations across the building, while pre-cast concrete caps provided additional detailing to the scheme.

A completely bespoke plaque was also produced by Vobster, adding a distinctive feature to the finished station and demonstrating the ability to develop individual architectural elements beyond standard manufactured products.

The project presented a number of additional considerations due to its location directly on the beach. Construction involved transporting materials and equipment across the beach and busy promenade, with works carefully coordinated around the tides. The station itself was constructed above the sands on a suspended concrete slab, creating additional challenges for access and temporary works during construction.

For Vobster, this provided an opportunity to apply its experience in bespoke architectural concrete to a project where individual details needed to work as part of a demanding coastal environment and a highly functional building.

## **Completion**

Construction of the new station originally began in April 2022, with the project subsequently paused following the original contractor entering administration. [Wynne Construction](https://wynneconstruction.co.uk/) was appointed to complete the works, with construction restarting in February 2024.

Following the restart, the station progressed towards completion, with the challenging seafront location requiring careful planning around access, tides and the movement of materials and equipment.

Vobster's architectural concrete elements were incorporated into the completed building, including the bespoke quoins, cills, heads, pre-cast concrete caps and individually produced plaque.

The completed station became operational on 8 August 2025, when the Cleethorpes RNLI crew moved their D-class lifeboat and essential equipment into the new facility. The station was put to immediate use, with the crew responding to three separate callouts within its first weekend.

The new facility also provides a dedicated viewing area into the boat hall, while the on-site RNLI shop gives the public an opportunity to engage with the station and its volunteers. The station subsequently opened to the public as part of Cleethorpes 999 Day on 30 August 2025.

Vobster Architectural was proud to contribute bespoke architectural concrete expertise to a significant new seafront landmark, supporting the creation of a facility designed to serve the Cleethorpes RNLI crew and wider community for years to come.
