Designed by [Karakusevic Carson Architects](https://www.karakusevic-carson.com/) for [Populo Living](https://www.populoliving.co.uk/) and constructed by [Higgins Partnerships](https://www.higginspartnerships.co.uk/), the scheme transforms a previously vacant site into a well-connected residential development overlooking the Greenway. Vobster Architectural supplied [wet cast stone](https://www.vobsterarchitectural.co.uk/products/bespoke-cast-stone) for the project, working alongside [Taylor Maxwell](https://www.taylormaxwell.co.uk/) to provide the architectural masonry specified for the development. ## **Concept to Completion** The architectural approach draws on the established character of the surrounding area, with the two buildings designed as contemporary interpretations of traditional mansion blocks. The buildings are arranged as L-shaped blocks around a shared central garden, creating a defined communal space while allowing the apartments to benefit from views and natural light. One block rises to five storeys, while the second is four storeys, giving the development variation in scale across the site. Material selection was central to the design. Red and buff brickwork form the principal facade treatments, with contrasting mortar colours used to give each building a distinct appearance. White brick is introduced around the inset balconies, adding further variation to the elevations. Wet cast stone provides a complementary architectural element within this palette. Vobster Architectural supplied cast stone components including window heads, bands, copings and capping and soffit details. The stonework gives definition to key areas of the elevations, particularly around window openings and along the horizontal elements of the buildings. Its use alongside the brick creates changes in texture and depth across the facades, helping to emphasise the proportions and detailing of the architecture. The entrance treatment provides another focal point, with substantial cast stone detailing creating a clear and considered arrival point to the building. The project also required careful consideration of the existing site. Before construction could begin, two existing houses were demolished and the vacant site cleared, including the removal of Japanese Knotweed. The constrained nature of the site added further coordination requirements during the construction process. Beyond the residential buildings, the completed scheme incorporates landscaping, cycle storage, plant rooms and a new sub-station. The communal garden provides residents with shared external space, while the development's relationship with the Greenway helps integrate the homes into the wider neighbourhood. The Grange ultimately combines a considered brick and wet cast stone material palette with carefully detailed residential architecture, demonstrating how cast stone can be used to introduce depth, definition and character to a predominantly brick-built façade.
