# Designing with Repetition: How Wet Cast Stone Components Create Cohesion

Repetition is an important part of architectural design. From [window surrounds](https://www.vobsterarchitectural.co.uk/products/window-surrounds) and [quoins](https://www.vobsterarchitectural.co.uk/products/quoins) to [cornices](https://www.vobsterarchitectural.co.uk/products/string-course-and-cornices), [balustrades](https://www.vobsterarchitectural.co.uk/products/portico-and-balustrade) and [feature panels](https://www.vobsterarchitectural.co.uk/products/corbels-and-features), repeating the same details across a building can create visual rhythm, balance and a strong sense of cohesion.

But achieving consistency across multiple architectural components can present its own challenges. Each piece needs to match the next, while maintaining the level of detail and accuracy expected by the original design.

Wet cast stone offers a practical solution. By using precision-manufactured moulds, detailed architectural components can be reproduced accurately and consistently, helping projects achieve a cohesive finish while supporting efficient production.

**From design to repeatable components**

At Vobster Architectural, project designs are developed into detailed CAD drawings, allowing the team to review the proposed stonework and identify opportunities to optimise the design and production process. Bespoke moulds can then be created from materials including solid timber, steel, fibreglass or polyurethane, depending on the requirements of the component.

Once a mould has been produced, it provides a consistent template for the components that follow. This is particularly valuable when a project requires multiple versions of the same architectural feature, as the same profile, dimensions and detailing can be reproduced time and again.

The result is greater consistency across the finished façade, without requiring every individual component to be produced from scratch.

**Consistency where it matters**

Architectural repetition is often used to establish visual rhythm. Repeated window surrounds, bay features, quoins or decorative details can help tie different areas of a building together, but small variations between individual pieces can interrupt that sense of cohesion.

Wet cast stone is well suited to this type of application. Its close-grained, dense surface allows fine details and intricate profiles to be accurately reproduced, while Vobster's precision moulds are designed to achieve accuracy and consistency across the finished components. This makes it possible to retain the character of a bespoke architectural design while achieving a consistent appearance across a larger number of units.

**Making production more efficient**

When the same component is required many times, designing and manufacturing a suitable mould can help streamline production. Rather than approaching every unit as an individual piece, the [production process](https://www.vobsterarchitectural.co.uk/processes/wet-cast-stone) can be optimised around a repeatable design.

This can be particularly valuable on larger developments, where hundreds of similar architectural components may be required.

A good example is [South Gardens](https://www.vobsterarchitectural.co.uk/case-studies/south-gardens-elephant-park), part of the regeneration of the former Heygate Estate in Elephant Park. The development required bay windows to be replicated across the large-scale residential scheme. The design was translated from CAD into wooden moulds, allowing the components to be efficiently reproduced and dispatched.

For projects working to demanding programmes, this approach can help simplify production and ensure components are ready to meet the build schedule.

**Reducing unnecessary waste**

Repetition can also bring advantages when it comes to material efficiency. A carefully considered mould and production process allows each component to be planned around the required dimensions, reducing the need for unnecessary cutting, shaping or material adjustment after casting. The ability to optimise bespoke cast stone details at the design stage can therefore help make better use of materials while supporting a more controlled manufacturing process.

This is particularly relevant when a project involves large quantities of the same feature, where small inefficiencies repeated across hundreds of components can quickly add up.

**Bespoke does not have to mean one-off**

One of the misconceptions around bespoke architectural components is that custom design necessarily means producing every piece individually. In reality, a bespoke feature can be designed once and then carefully replicated.

Wet cast stone can be formed into almost any shape or profile, allowing intricate and highly detailed architectural features to be created while maintaining consistency between repeated units. Vobster's mould-making process can also be used to recreate existing details, making it suitable for both new-build projects and sensitive restoration work.

For architects, this creates an opportunity to develop distinctive details without making production unnecessarily complex.

**Designing for cohesion**

Good architectural repetition is rarely about simply duplicating the same component. It is about using recurring details to establish a visual language across a building.

Wet cast stone can support this approach by combining design flexibility with the accuracy needed for repeated manufacture. From large-scale residential developments to detailed restoration projects, mould-based production allows architectural features to be reproduced with a high level of consistency while retaining the character of the original design.

At Vobster Architectural, our experience in bespoke wet cast stone allows us to work with architects and specifiers from initial design through to production, helping to optimise components for both the finished appearance and the practical requirements of the project.

When repetition is considered as part of the design process from the outset, it can become more than a way of creating visual rhythm. It can help create a more efficient, accurate and cohesive approach to architectural stonework.
