String Course and Cornices

What are String Courses and Cornices?

This horizontal feature is also known as a band course, which can be installed to define levels of a building and aesthetically break up the brickwork. This may be installed flush with the building or projecting with cornice detail. Cornices historically are used to divert rainwater from the building but also make for an ornamental feature. We can develop bespoke moulds that suit any project preferences.

Now extremely popular in modern western architecture, string courses have been seen across Classical Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Renaissance builds. In classical and neo-classical styles, it popularly runs along the upper or lower line of windows. Cornices additionally originate from ancient Greek and Roman architecture, sitting above columns as part of the entablature or below the roof.
